About Us

Our Mission

Our mission is to assist clients in improving overall health and establishing a healthy relationship with food and body weight. We use a variety of approaches utilizing clients’ history and personal background with expertise from a clinical and whole person perspective to develop individualized nutrition plans. Changing eating behaviors and thoughts around food can be challenging; thus our treatment approach is designed to aid in behavior modification while working towards better nutrition.

 

Shelly Starrett

Owner

Shelly started Natural Balance Nutrition in 2009. Prior to private practice, she worked as a clinical dietitian in a hospital for nearly 8 years. During that time, she also began her work with eating disorders. Since 2005, she has worked at 2 eating disorder recovery centers that included Residential, Partial Hospitalization, and Intensive Outpatient levels of care. She treats males and females of all age groups using a holistic nutrition approach. Shelly has extensive experience in nutrition therapy for the varying degrees of dysregulated eating and feeding issues. Her passion is assisting others in increasing health and restoring natural eating cues using a mind-body approach; thus creating a more balanced relationship with food and overall well-being.

Leslie Beggs

Lead Dietitian

Leslie is a Registered Dietitian dedicated to helping clients overcome nutritional challenges and achieve lasting peace with food and body weight through a balanced, non-diet approach. As a foundation of nutrition therapy, Leslie helps women and men regain trust in the body's natural ability to guide the eating process and break destructive eating and dieting patterns that interfere with health and living life! Leslie has several years’ experience helping clients struggling with eating disorders, chronic dieting and painful relationships with food and understands how challenging, even scary, changing eating habits can seem. As such, Leslie provides all clients with compassion, understanding and ongoing encouragement to support continued progress towards nutritional recovery. Additionally, with a background in sports and fitness Leslie helps individuals struggling with harmful exercise patterns achieve balanced, healthy exercise habits and fueling strategies that support health and joyful movement. Leslie strongly believes in personalized nutrition care and practices a holistic, individualized approach that supports behavior change and healing of the body.

Leslie meets with clients at her San Antonio office as well as remotely via telehealth for those unable to meet in person. In addition to nutrition counseling, education and meal planning services Leslie also provides support dining out, grocery shopping and cooking upon request.

Jenna Smith

Registered Dietitian

Jenna is a Registered Dietitian passionate to help individuals suffering from an eating disorder. When she set out to become a dietitian, it was her dream to specialize in the treatment of eating disorders. Although newer to the profession, she has been working with eating disorders since 2013 in various levels of care including Residential, Partial Hospitalization, and Intensive Outpatient. During her internship, she also completed her specialty rotation in the setting of eating disorder treatment. Since obtaining her license, she has been working for Center For Discovery as one of their dietitians. She also works part-time as a clinical dietitian for Kaiser Permanente providing her with valuable experience in general nutrition and health-related concerns. Jenna supports her clients with nutrition counseling and also offers meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking exposure, meal outings, and nutrition support groups.

Arielle Mize

Registered Dietitian

Arielle is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Lactation Consultant with a background in helping women thrive in pregnancy and the postpartum period. She has a wide variety of experience, however, ranging from helping pregnant women manage Gestational Diabetes to offering a Health At Every Size approach to various health conditions and concerns in the outpatient setting. Arielle is passionate about helping people heal their relationship with food and their bodies and has been spreading the message of intuitive eating on her blog Honeydew You since 2018. Arielle believes that everyone can be free from the joy-stealing grasp of disordered eating, and wants to help you live a joyful life that lines up with your values.
